Introduction to Science

Science is about curiosity.  Children are born with an innate curiosity that has them exploring the world around them.  As they age, they learn that society does not always appreciate and reward curiosity.  It has been deemed that science should be included in the core education of all students.  What does that really mean?

Students need to remember their curiosity. Science is the world around them.  In school science classes, the focus is on Scientific Phenomenon.  That is such a big word and it seems so official. It is a daunting word that (IMO) makes me think I will only be exploring big things like volcanoes or car crashes.  It's not.  It is observing everyday phenomenon and asking questions to explore further in their study.  An official definition for Scientific Phenomenon is ....

There are many different parts of science and they all work together to explain the world.

  • Life Science is the study of all living things. Another word for Life Science is Biology so either one can be used to describe Life Science.  This branch of science includes animals like us and plants like trees.  It also studies single cell organisms.
  • Earth Science explores the Earth and space. Earth science will study all the nonliving items and the history of Earth.
  • Physical Science deals with matter and and energy.  These are the basic building blocks of every single thing in this universe.  Physics and Chemistry both fall under this part of science.  Physics deals with the relationship between energy and matter. Chemistry deals with matter and how it changes or transforms.

Some important things to remember about science.  It happens everywhere and all the time.  Science seeks to understand and explain both small and big phenomenon.  It does not come easy for everyone, but the beauty of science is that it is okay to mess up.  If your exploration does not work right or prove your ideas, it isn't a failure.  Understanding why something is wrong is an important part of figuring out what is true. Read that again. Understanding why something is wrong is an important part of figuring out what is true.  It's okay to fail, as long as you try...

Prepare your self for a growth mindset as you explore the world around you and seek to understand.  Give yourself permission for success and failure.  Commit to the process and you will find success.  Good Luck!
